Wellbeing for Women

Welcome. I am a mental health professional, trained and licensed in the United States and living in Barcelona. My focus is on women’s mental health, especially during pregnancy and the postnatal period. In addition to individual therapy, I lead groups for first-time mothers and provide training and consultation for perinatal professionals and organizations. I provide services in English and Spanish, and I also speak Catalan and French.

Depression is the #1 complication of pregnancy and childbirth.

If you are suffering, there are three very important things for you to remember:

  • You are not alone.
  • You are not to blame.
  • With help, you will get better.

If you need help, please contact me.

Psychotherapy

Do you not feel like yourself since having a baby?

Are you living far from family and friends and suffering from a lack of social support? Do you feel like you love your baby, but you hate your life?

I can help.

I was trained as a psychotherapist in the United States, with a specialty in mental health during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

I facilitated a support group for new moms for 10 years.

And perhaps most importantly, I had my own experience with depression and anxiety after the birth of my first son.

I know how it feels, and I know what it takes to get better.

Please don’t hesitate to call or email for a free consultation.

If you don't live in Barcelona, I am also available to meet with you remotely.

Training

One of my favorite parts of my work is training other professionals. I have conducted training in both English and Spanish, for groups ranging in size from five to 250 participants.

Examples of professionals I have trained include:

  • Obstetricians, gynecologists and pediatricians
  • Lactation consultants and doulas
  • Daycare center directors and home visitors
  • Nurses, nurse practitioners and nurse midwives
  • Medical students and residents
  • Mental health providers, including psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors and clinical social workers

As a trainer I consistently receive positive evaluations, and trainees report that they value the combination of education, professional experience and personal, lived experience that I bring.

If your organization needs training in perinatal mental health, please get in touch!

Consulting

I have years of experience working with nonprofit organizations, and a successful track record in the following specific areas:

  • Program development & management
  • Grant writing & fundraising
  • Coalition & consensus building
  • Advocacy & policy change
  • Clinical research
  • Clinical supervision

If you are looking for someone with my skills and experience, please get in touch to talk about your project and see if I meet your needs.

Speaking

I really enjoy public speaking, and have experience with live audiences of all sizes as well as with webinars, academic presentations, and live and taped television and radio interviews.

My speaking style isrelaxed, dynamic and confident. I use a healthy dose of humor to engage my audience and keep them with me for the duration of my presentation.

To my clinical presentations, I bring the immediacy of direct, lived experience as a mother who had postpartum depression and anxiety. To my speeches for lay audiences, I am able to impart clinical knowledge and evidence-based information without falling back on jargon or making my audience feel like they are in school.

I give speeches and presentations in English, Spanish, and Catalan.

My own experiencewith postpartum depression and anxiety changed my life — first for the worse, and then for the better.

After I recovered, I could not understand why, throughout my entire pregnancy and many postpartum visits, no one so much as mentioned the possibility that this could happen. And mental health issues are the #1 complication of pregnancy!

So, I decided to get involved. I became a volunteer support group leader and eventually went to graduate school to become a clinical social worker. The silver lining to one of the most difficult experiences of my life is that I found my calling. I truly love my work!
